happn: dating app for local matches

happn is a dating app by happn that connects users based on real-life geographical proximity and shared frequented places. The app tracks when members cross paths in daily settings—such as a café, workplace, or during a commute—and presents those profiles for potential matches. With over 140 million users globally, it aims to transform missed encounters into opportunities for dates and relationships while emphasizing privacy controls and mutual interest before any messaging occurs.

The core interaction relies on a like-and-dislike mechanism: if two users both like each other, it becomes a "Crush," unlocking chat and date planning. For those who want to stand out, a SuperCrush feature lets a user proactively notify another member, while CrushTime adds a gamified element where users guess who liked them. The app also includes Teasers and Hobbies, short glimpses into a user's personality through life moments and interest tags, which were expanded in version 2026.20.0 with a fresh set of unique hobby options to foster more meaningful matches.

Safety and privacy are central to the design: location data is never shared precisely, only crossing points are indicated, and users control who can see them and what information is disclosed. The app runs on a freemium model with optional Premium subscriptions that unlock features like seeing who liked you and additional SuperCrushes. It includes advertisements and in-app purchases, and the current release (2026.20.0) also brings UI refinements and performance improvements, continuing the app's evolution since its initial release in 2014.

Latest changes · 2026.22.0

Version 2026.20.0 adds a new Hobbies feature. Users can now select from unique hobby options to express their personality and interests. The update aims to help members find matches who share similar activities. This is the main functional change in this release, which was updated on 2026-10-21.

This app suits singles who frequently move through busy urban environments and want to connect with people they encounter in daily life. It also appeals to users who value privacy controls and prefer a mutual-consent approach to messaging, as well as those who enjoy gamified elements in dating apps.

To get the most out of the app, complete your profile with clear photos and set your Hobbies accurately—this increases the likelihood of matching with users who share your interests and makes conversation starters more natural.

happn offers a distinct dating approach by leveraging real-world proximity, which can feel more authentic than algorithm-only matching. While its privacy features and large user base are strong points, the presence of ads and the need for location permissions might deter some. Overall, it is a solid choice for urban singles open to meeting people in their daily path, provided they accept the freemium model and mature content rating.
